Senior Legal Advisor: Claims Assurance

The Road Accident Fund’s mission is to provide appropriate cover to all road users within the borders of South Africa; to rehabilitate and compensate persons injured as a result of motor vehicle accidents in a timely and caring manner; and to actively promote safe use of our roads.
Purpose of the Job: Reporting to the Manager: Claims Assurance, the successful incumbent is responsible for the administration of claims assurance to assist in the protection of the RAF’s financial exposure on claims and to help manage those exposures that can produce financial loss, and to support the RAF in the reduction in litigation costs, inflated settlement offers, fraud, improved litigation outcome, and uniformity of processes and procedures by claims staff.
Key Performance Areas
Provide Leadership in the Claims Assurance Management
- Ensure that claims assurance is effectively conducted and finalised in accordance with defined processes and procedures, and timelines.
- Ensure all required supporting information is attached to claims assurance requests before processing.
- Ensure all claims assurance requests are reviewed in a timely and correct manner.
- Ensure that complete diary notes are made on the Claims Assurance Management System on a daily basis.
- Ensure that proper records are kept for all claims assurance requests received.
- Liaise with external attorneys, medical and other experts where applicable.
Provide Legal Advice
- Provide legal advice to the RAF on litigated claims and direct claims as appropriate.
- Ensure that deviation from policy or process on claims is documented and reported.
- Provide training to business to optimise claims processing.
Policy Review and Implementation
- Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental policy, procedures and processes.
- Keep up to date with effective policy and practice execution strategies.
Reporting
- Prepare and submit public relations reports as and when required to provide progress updates and/or inform management decisions.
- Develop reports/ policies/ procedures and guide the process through the alignment of the documents to the overall RAF’s strategy.
- Develop functional reporting systems, for management, projects or performance reporting.
Stakeholder Management
- Facilitate and manage communication with relevant internal and external stakeholders and proactively and progressively manage the relationships.
- Communicate with all levels of stakeholder contact.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law or equivalent.
- Relevant 5 - 7 years’ experience in a Litigation related environment.
- Business sector experience – preferably in a parastatal organisation.
